Welcome to my blog! I’m Svetlana Gureva (also known as Svetlana Alter), a sports journalist based in Madrid, where the tapas are as addictive as the football chants, and life revolves around the love of the game. I’m here to share stories, insights, and probably a few bad jokes along the way.
Languages, Literature, and Laughs
I graduated from the University of Barcelona with a degree in Modern Languages and Literature—which is just a fancy way of saying I read a lot of books and learned to conjugate verbs in English, Spanish, French, and Russian(while surviving Catalan’s tricky grammar). Fun fact: mastering four languages wasn’t enough for me, so I picked up some Catalan and German too, because, hey, who needs free time?
As they say, “Learning another language is like acquiring a second soul.” So with all my languages, I guess I’m running a whole soul-sharing economy.
From Fencer to Fence-Sitter
Before I ever held a mic, I wielded a saber as a professional fencer, battling on the international stage. And while winning championships was exhilarating, I eventually traded lunges on the piste for punches on a keyboard. What can I say? The pen is mightier than the sword (especially if it comes with a good Wi-Fi connection).
Sports Are My Love Language
I’ve been hooked on sports for as long as I can remember. Tennis, ice hockey, Formula 1, and football are more than just games to me—they’re my lifeblood, my escape, and sometimes my excuse for eating too many snacks while “analyzing” matches.
Currently, I’m pursuing a master’s degree in sports journalism with Universidad Europea and Real Madrid, because where better to study sports than at a club where “winning” is part of the job description?

What truly gets me excited isn’t just the stats (although they’re cool) but the human stories behind the athletes. As the great Maya Angelou said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” And isn’t that what sports are all about? The drama, the tears, the triumphs—and let’s not forget the post-match memes.
